Dixie Michell

POSTED IN Uncategorized september 3, 2015

I just found out that earlier this year, on February 9, Dixie Michell passed away — see this article in The Tulsa Voice. Dixie was a luthier from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I happen to own a guitar that she built, which I bought from Gruhn Guitars in Nashville TN in 2009.

I wrote a song about that guitar — here are the lyrics:

she came from Tulsa, Oklahoma, made it to Tennessee
resting from her journey, wide open like me
away from the bars on Broadway, the crowd and the noise
I found her at Gruhn’s, discovered her voice

spruce and cypress – she rang like a bell
built by the hands of Dixie Michell

the price tag said it was new, but little did they know
‘bout the land where she was raised, ‘bout the depth of her soul
shopworn and humble, in a room filled with guitars
of legendary fame – but she spoke to my heart

spruce and cypress – she rang like a bell
built by the hands of Dixie Michell

Dixie, thank you for sending this guitar out into the world, where it was quietly waiting to be discovered.

To all you guitar players: Dixie was also a wonderful musician, playing old-time music, such as in the style of Mississippi John Hurt. You can hear her play and sing on YouTube: Rest in Peace Dixie.
